Matt (Kieran O’Brien) is a British geologist who analyses sample bores of ice, deciphering thousands of years of glacial history from their compacted layers. As he does fieldwork in the extreme isolation of Antarctica, he finds himself also examining a single year from his own life, trying to piece together from a few intense memories – nine different gigs which perfectly captured the mood of the moment, and some episodes of sexual intimacy which came in between – what if any significance there was in his relationship (now over, or at least on ice) with visiting American student Lisa (Margo Stilley), and whether he was any less lonely then than he is now on the icy wastes.

Shot in digital video with a tiny crew and a speaking cast of just two, and composed almost entirely of live concert footage and sex scenes, ‘9 Songs’ is an experiment in reductive narrative. Its basic storyline – guy meets girl, they have a relationship and then split up – is so familiar from real life as well as from countless films that director Michael Winterbottom can afford to dispense with any peripheral details and get right down to what is most essential in Matt’s memory. Bold as this strategy may be, it is more than a mere exercise in formalism – for the film’s Antarctic frame orients its viewers as geologists, and reveals the evolution of a relationship in tightly focussed cross-sections which not only encapsulate the most heightened moments of connection between the lovers, but also expose all the tell-tale signs of fissure, fatigue and encroaching chill. Exploring the lonely voids of the Antarctic produces, as Matt puts it, “claustrophobia and agoraphobia in the same place, like two people in a bed” – and he seems unsure whether sex and music are enough to stave off, however briefly, the icy cold of human existence.

Isadora Edison is coming home to suburbia. Her old boyfriend Nelson is banging every girl he can get his hands on. Now he’s shacking up with Isadora’s Aunt Cynthia, (Tina Tyler). This makes Nelson’s sister Judith rage with jealousy as she wants his lips all for herself. Isadora also wants a piece of the Nelson action and drags him into bed as soon as she lays eyes on him. This all leads to a domino effect through town as the whole city hops in the sack with each other. Whether the sex partners are related to each other is not a concern. It’s actually a turn-on for them if they are.

“Suburban Secrets” brings up an interesting moral dilemma for the viewer. Namely, is it wrong to get off on incest sex scenes? Should I be really getting into the fact that a brother and sister are having sex or should I be repulsed? One of the main strengths of “Suburban Secrets” is that it tries really hard to be dirty. This is something you don’t see in the usual softcore flick as they are normally quite content to have anonymous bodies squirm all over each other. In “Suburban Secrets”, every sex scene is full of lust and guilt. These people want each other and they don’t care if they’ll bump into each other again at the next family reunion.

Oh, how you've waited for this day. Maybe. It's been years since that former staple of Hong Kong Cinema - the ancient costume Category III sexploitation flick - has reared its soft-focus head, but the wait is now over. The Forbidden Legend: Sex & Chopsticks returns that hallowed genre to Hong Kong Cinema, bringing with it the fleshy beauties, questionably attractive leading men, softcore couplings, and game silliness that have so enchanted midnight movie audiences worldwide. Action, crime, and arthouse films have more international cachet, but do audiences in Europe and North America care more about opulent softcore pornography than a well-written, acted and directed romantic comedy? I'm guessing that they do, and thanks to the geniuses(?) at My Way Films, those people and their raincoats can head back to the cinemas. A round of beers and high-fives for everyone.

Hold on a sec - this isn't typical softcore sleaze. Nope, this is wannabe classy stuff, since it's based on Jin Ping Mei, a.k.a. The Plum in the Golden Vase, a famous 17th century novel considered to be among the major classical novels of Chinese literature, right next to a little book called The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Thanks to both Sex & Chopsticks and Red Cliff, 2008 is now the year that the classics have returned to Hong Kong Cinema. Okay, that's a bit of an overstatement - as is comparing Sex & Chopsticks director Chin Man-Kei (Sex and Zen 2) to John Woo - but seeing this film get theatrical play does feel a bit nostalgic. Back in Hong Kong Cinema's heyday (i.e., the time they used to release 200+ movies per year), you'd be guaranteed a few of these films per year. That's not the case now, with the industry suffering so completely that even a film that's considered a hit can't earn its budget back at the box office. In today's rough moviemaking climate, movies like Sex & Chopsticks are now a welcome event.
